JAIPUR: A court in Rajasthan's Jodhpur city on Monday sent spiritual guru Asaram Bapu, arrested for alleged sexual assault on a minor, to 14 days' judicial custody, a police official said.
"Asaram has been sent to judicial custody till Sep 15," a police official told the IANS from Jodhpur.
He will be lodged in the Jodhpur Central Jail.
Asaram will be produced before the court on Tuesday morning for the bail hearing, according to a special prosecutor.
Strong case against Asaram: Police
The Jodhpur police, following Asaram's arrest, said the case against the godman is "very strong" and that the probe is moving the right direction, according to a Times of India report.
Jodhpur DCP Ajay Pal Lamba was quoted by the Times of India as saying, "Our case is very strong and moving in the right direction. More time would be required to complete the probe, and it would be decided at the time of producing Asaram whether to seek more time for police custody or judicial custody."
When asked if Asaram was suffering from a neuro disorder, the DCP said, "It has been proved to be a lie. His son can say what he wants to say. We can't comment on anybody's statement".
"A team of doctors said he is perfectly OK. He is mentally and physically fit. The accused is also taking food whenever served."
Asaram was earlier quizzed in connection with the case of sexual assault lodged against him by a 16-year-old girl, an official said. The incident allegedly took place Aug 15 in his ashram outside Jodhpur city.
Flown to Jodhpur Sunday afternoon after his arrest from his ashram in Madhya Pradesh's Indore past midnight Saturday, Asaram was presented before a court which sent him to one day's police remand.
Asaram Bapu, 72, passes potency test
Hours after his dramatic midnight arrest from his ashram in Indore, a Rajasthan Police team flew Asaram to Jodhpur where they questioned him in connection with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl, to which he pleaded innocence.
The police, who also ran a potency test on Asaram, said he was found capable of sexual assault.
He was later produced in a local court that sent him to police custody for a day. As the charge against him is non-bailable, the self-styled godman will go to jail Monday evening after his remand ends.
Asaram was also put through medical checks, including a potency test that came out positive. Police commissioner Biju George Joseph said a team of doctors had found Asaram to be physically potent while the other tests had declared him medically fit — contradictory to claims he made earlier to delay his questioning.
The police then took him to his ashram in Manai, 30 km from the city, where he is said to have sexually assaulted the schoolgirl on August 15. Some 100-150 of his supporters were waiting there and they tried to block the police convoy. The police lathicharged the crowd and arrested over 12 of them. (With inputs from agencies)
