Army to ensure R-Day peace

Jan. 25: The army has been deployed and CRPF contingents have started patrolling vulnerable parts of Cachar district's Lakhipur subdivision in a precautionary measure on the eve of Republic Day tomorrow.

Lakhipur is 25km from Silchar.

A senior official in the district today said such elaborate security arrangements have been made to pre-empt any violence as a few militant outfits have a given a call to boycott the Republic Day functions.

He said the Hmar People's Conference (Democratic), NSCN (both Isak-Muivah and Khaplang factions), People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) have called for the boycott.

Intelligence sources said boycott calls are a regular feature since 1991, when the insu-rgent groups made their presence felt in the area, inhabited by Meiteis and Nagas.

Cachar police have enlisted the help of the village defence party (VDP) formations to maintain peace.

A senior official today said the police and the parties have been specifically asked to mount a special vigil in the subdivision's rail line network, road bridges, electric transformers, markets, bus stands, educational institutions and other thickly populated places.

The Kokrajhar district administration has also intensified security measures ahead of Republic Day.

Kokrajhar deputy commissioner Jayant Narlikar said the district administration has tighten the security in and around the district, including the Indo-Bhutan border and inter-state border areas.

The district administration has promulgated Section 144 CrPC and restricted pillion-riding.

He said there are reports of militant activity on the India-Bhutan border, especially in Kokrajhar.
