Antony in tune with MEA over China's Brahmaputra dams

New Delhi, Feb. 1 (ANI): Defence Minister A.K. Antony on Friday backed the External Affairs Ministry's views with regard to India's concerns over China's move to built three more dams on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet.

Antony said the Ministry of External Affairs has cleared officially the Indian position regarding the Brahmaputra issue.

"Our government is one government, ministries may be various. Whatever the External Affairs Ministry said yesterday is the official reaction of the Government of India," he added.

India yesterday asked China to ensure that the interests of downstream states are not harmed by any activities in upstream areas.

"As a lower riparian State with considerable established user rights to the waters of the River, India has conveyed its views and concerns to the Chinese authorities, including at the highest levels of the Government of the People's Republic of China," said MEA official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin in response to a question on the Brahmaputra river.

"India urges China to ensure that the interests of downstream states are not harmed by any activities in upstream areas," he added.

According to reports, China has approved construction of three more dams on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet in addition to the one being built. (ANI)
