Another link planned on Subernarekha

Another bridge over the Subernarekha, to connect the steel city with NH-33, is being planned.

The location of the proposed bridge, to be set up by Tata Steel, is at Babudih, close to Tata Bluescope in Sidhgora on the Jamshedpur end, and at Baliguma across the river along NH-33, about 3km from Dimna Road.

Sources in the steel major said survey of the locality and site selection are already over, and paperwork for initiating construction is on.

The proposed bridge is part of the company's Western Corridor project, which is going to be set up on PPP basis with the state government chipping in as partner.

According to a senior official of Tata Steel, the bridge will be linked to a flyover directly from Tata Bluescope towards Tatanagar railway station.

He pointed out the cost of the proposed bridge would be included in the company's Western Corridor Project, which is estimated at over Rs 1,200 crore.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the official revealed that the idea behind setting up the bridge and the flyover was to lessen traffic congestion, especially of heavy vehicles.

"Though the project is being set up on PPP basis, with the state government as a partner, Tata Steel will spend for the project cent per cent. This will, of course, be a toll-bridge," said the official.

He added that the bridge will be meant only for heavy vehicles and cars, and not two-wheelers or three-wheelers.

Sources said before selecting the site for the new bridge and flyover, the company had conducted a thorough survey of the city roads taking into consideration factors like the pressure of traffic during peak hours and congestion.

Notably, the city has two bridges in Mango over river Subarnarekha and construction of another bridge in the eastern part of the city linking Luabasa to NH-33 is under progress.
