'I am in great anguish': Meira Kumar on LS disruptions

New Delhi, Aug. 22 (ANI): Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Thursday said she is disturbed and upset that the Lower House has not been functioning effectively from day one of the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

"I am in great anguish, I am so pained and you know it has not functioned from day one. From the day it started, we have not done any work at all. And this is not how the Lok Sabha should be functioning," Kumar told media here.

"We have so much before us, so many bills, legislative business, so many discussions under 193 calling attention; we have not been able to take it up, and I am very disturbed and upset about it," she added.

To a poser on the government's motion to suspend 11 Andhra Pradesh MPs for disrupting Parliament with their protests against the formation of a new Telangana state, the Lok Sabha Speaker said a decision in this regard would be taken by Friday.

"Since it has been moved by the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, he also has a certain decision to make. And we will be arriving at a decision by tomorrow," she said.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday amid a continued uproar over the motion to suspend 11 members for repeatedly raking up the Telangana statehood issue.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the second time till 12.45 hours earlier in the day.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath, who moved a motion to suspend the 11 members for continuously raising the Telangana issue, said these members should be suspended for the rest of the Monsoon Session to ensure a smooth functioning of the House.

These MPs, from the coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, have created a ruckus in the House every day since the session began and the motion for their suspension underscores the government's resolve to remove all bottlenecks - including its own MPs - that are holding up important legislations like its ambitious Food Security Bill, from being passed in Parliament.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, protested against the motion, and said that her party is in favour of formation of a Telangana state. But she regretted the manner in which the ruling Congress Party had announced the creation of a separate state. (ANI)
