New Delhi, Dec. 29 (ANI): The All India Football Federation (AIFF) slapped a two-year ban on the country's oldest soccer club, Mohun Bagan, on Saturday after refusing to take the field for the second half of its clash against East Bengal on December 9, a tie reported to be spectator-sensitive leading to possible violence.
Mohun Bagan was trailing their archrivals 1-0 on December 9 in Kolkata when a stone hurled from the stands hit one of its players. The match resumed after around 15-minute interruption but Mohun Bagan did not return to the field.
AIFF had appointed A K Ganguly, a retired judge to look into the case and his finding got the approval of an I-League Core Committee on Saturday.
An AIFF statement said Mohun Bagan had been thrown out of the ongoing I-League competition, their matches had been declared null and void, and they would be disqualified from the next two editions of the league.
"The I-League core committee endorses the decision of Justice A K Ganguly that MMB (McDowells Mohun Bagan) was in breach of I-League regulations and therefore the breach of regulation mean, the mandatory and automatic impositions on MMB are: one, of being considered to have withdrawn from the I-League competition 2012-13, two, to have all it's matches in the I-League competition 2012-13 cancelled and considered null and void. All points, goals scored and against being taken away. Three, being disqualified from taking part in the two editions of the I-League competition, four, to return to the I-League any financial stipend that has been paid to it by the I-League throughout the competition 2012-13 or forfeit the right to receive," said General Secretary of AIFF, Kushal Das.
The club would also have to 'surrender to the I-League any financial stipends or fees that had been paid to it by I-League throughout the competition 2012-2013 or forfeit the right to the same,' the AIFF said in a statement.
A revised fixture and point's table would soon be issued, the AIFF added.
The I-League Committee will decide on any possible additional sanction or fine in a January 9 meeting where the club would be asked to present its case. (ANI)
