Advani meets RSS chief, resents Modi's rise

Advani and RSS chief Bhagwat met for the first time after Advani revolted following Modi's elevation as the party's face in the Lok Sabha polls.

NEW DELHI: BJP veteran leader LK Advani and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat met for the first time after Advani revolted following Narendra Modi's elevation as the party's face in the Lok Sabha polls.

A day after their meeting got called off on Wednesday, Advani went to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) office and spent an hour with Bhagwat.

Officially, no details were available about the meeting. But informed sources said they discussed the situation since the June 9 appointment of the Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as head of the party's campaign committee.

India Today reports that the senior leader also said that Modi's appointment as the campaign chief will scare away allies and weaken the NDA coalition.

Bhagwat had played a key role in resolving the crisis in the BJP after Advani resigned from key party posts June 10, one day after Modi's elevation was announced at a party meet in Goa.

Advani had created a sensation by alleging in a letter to BJP president Rajnath Singh that most party leaders were busy pursuing personal agenda.

The sources said Advani has reservations over the role played by some RSS functionaries who apparently promoted Modi.

Modi's elevation has also split the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, with the Janata Dal-United walking away from the coalition.
