Singapore: KL Rahul’s unbeaten 93 helped India U-23 defeat Pakistan U-23 by 9 wickets in the final of the Asian Cricket Council Emerging Teams Cup at the Kallang Ground here on Sunday.
Chasing Pakistan’s below par total of 159 all out, Rahul teamed up with Manprit Juneja (51) as India made short work of the target, going home to victory in over No.33. Unmukt Chand (15) was the only batsman who walked back to the Indian dressing room, after he fell to Raza Hasan.
Earlier, Baba Aparajith took 3/28 as Pakistan were restricted to a modest score of 159 all out from 47 overs. Once openers Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam were bundled out before the tenth over, right-hander Umar Waheed fought back with 41. Along with Usman Salahuddin, Waheed put together a 54-run partnership for the third wicket, before the former was dismissed by Suryakumar Yadav. Things went from bad to worse, after Ankit Bawne ran Waheed out.
Aparajith then began to chip away at the bottom order, with a little bit of help from Yadav (2/20) and Bawne (1/3). Fortunately for Pakistan, Usman Qadir (33) and Ehsan Adil (20) took their team from 107/9 to 159/9, when Sandeep Sharma came back to finish the innings by bowling through Qadir’s defence .
It would be a one-sided final.
