65 pct New Yorkers back stricter gun laws: Poll

Washington, Feb 5 (ANI): A majority of New Yorkers support a stringent new state law that tackles gun control, according to a poll.

The survey from Siena Research Institute showed that 65 percent of those polled back the measure, which was passed last month in the wake of the December shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn.

According to the poll, 30 percent are opposed the measure.

The legislation, which is the toughest in the country, took steps including banning certain kinds of military-style weapons, reducing the ammunition quantities weapons can hold and requiring background checks to purchase bullets, Politico reports.

The poll, that covered 1,154 New York state voters, also showed that Democrats support the policy 82 percent to 12 percent who oppose it.

Republicans oppose it 63 percent to 33 percent, the survey added. (ANI)
