Mendis is a revelation, says Trevor Bayliss

Mendis is a revelation not only for Sri Lankan cricket but for world cricket as well. He is different from most spinners say a Muralitharan, Anil Kumble or Harbhajan Singh, says the Sri Lankan coach in an interview to Asian Age.

Sri Lanka’s practice session ahead of the second Test here against India was full of intensity and indicated no complacency that can come with a win as convincing as the one achieved in Colombo. A good part of the credit should go to coach Trevor Bayliss for making this team constantly strive to better their game.

Excerpts from an interview:

On wrapping it up in Galle: We were looking forward to this series even before it started and we played some very good cricket in the first Test. It was a near perfect match for us. We expect to play a similar match here and wrap up the series and at the same time we know it won’t be as easy as the Indians will come back hard.

On the pitch: It looks very similar to SSC. Last time when we played here Chaminda Vaas took four wickets against England and I expect him to be the same of threat here again. Spin will certainly continue to be our strength. I hope Mendis and Muralitharan can bowl the same as they did in Colombo.

On Mendis: He is a revelation not only for Sri Lankan cricket but for world cricket as well. He is different from most spinners say a Muralitharan, Anil Kumble or Harbhajan Singh. Batsmen will start picking him better as they play more of him. At the same time he has a good head and is a quick learner. He has a good future ahead of him.

On India’s show at the SSC: Harbhajan and Kumble are two world-class spinners and it is not often they end up with just two wickets in an entire match. I am sure they will come back strongly. As far as batting goes the odd rash shot was played. It was also because of the pressure that was exerted from both ends.

On handling Lanka’s spinners: Frankly I don’t know myself. They are two quality spinners. The best of batsmen will struggle against them and there will be days where they (Murali and Mendis) find it tough against a few batsmen as well.
