I have learnt a lot from Symonds: Rohit

On the eve of his team's home game against Mumbai Indians, Deccan Chargers' Rohit Sharma spoke to Devendra Pandey about his form during the IPL III and his selection to the T20 World Cup squad. Excerpts:

You should be feeling at home at DY Patil?

Yes, one can say DY Patil is my home ground. I have played many matches here. We are disappointed to have lost our last game against Rajasthan but with nine matches left, we are hopeful of getting our IPL III campaign back on track.

What are the things you have picked up from the likes of Andrew Symonds and Herschelle Gibbs?

They are great team players and I have learnt a lot from them. Symonds is fearless and he can hit a six off any ball - including the first one he faces. One day he told me that a bad ball had its place in the stands and there is no point in wasting it. From Gibbs, I'm learning the art of fielding. He has passed on a number of tips on approaching the ball in the field.

Were you expecting to get picked for the World T20 in the Caribbean?

I was hoping to be a part of the T20 squad, of which I have always been a part of. And I was happy to be picked as always.

How do you react to the constant flak that you have received for your inconsistency?

One thing I have learnt is that being criticised is a part and parcel of being a sportsman and it is better not to react to it. No one can score a hundred in every innings and no one wants to get out early. Most of the people who do pass comments haven't played cricket.

How important is this one month leading up to the World Cup going to be for you. Do you think you have to prove a point to anyone?

There is nothing like proving a point. It was just the matter of one innings and I'm happy to get my touch back. I take things as they come and right now I am not thinking about anything but to try my best with the bat for the Deccan Chargers.
