West Indies vs India: 2nd Test, Day 1

Second Test : West Indies vs India at Bridgetown in Jun 2011 - First day's play

 

West Indies won the toss and fielded first providing the 14th occasion of West Indies inserting India. It was the fifth such occasion at Bridgetown. The other four occasions are - in Mar 1962, Apr 1983, Apr 1989 and May 2002

 

R Dravid was playing his 200th innings in the first innings of this test while batting at number three. He became the first batsman in the annals of test cricket to earn this distinction.

R Dravid was playing his 22nd innings against West Indies while batting number three. His 22 innings is record for an Indian batsman batting at number three against West Indies. He went past M Amaranth's 21 innings which was the earlier record. The list of batsmen who have played 20 plus innings against West Indies batting at number three read thus - RT Ponting {25}, IM Chappell {22}, R Dravid {22}, M Amarnath {21} and JL Langer {20}. R Dravid is on par with IM Chappell who has also played 22 innings against West Indies while batting at number three.

 

R Dravid was playing his 152nd test and is on par with RT Ponting who has also played 152 tests. SR Tendulkar {177}, SR Waugh {168} and AR Border {156} are the other cricketers who have played more tests than R Dravid and RT Ponting.

 

R Dravid was dismissed for five in the first innings providing the 63rd occasion of his  scoring between zero and nine. He has been dismissed for a score of exact five on eight occasions. The other Indian batsmen who have scored of exact five on eight or more occasions are - BS Bedi {10}, SC Ganguly {10}, SM Gavaskar {08} and A Kumble {08}

 

V Kohli and A Mithun collected ducks in this game providing the 184th and 185th occasion of an Indian batsman scoring zero in an innings against West Indies.

 

India lost its four wickets for 38 runs in this test providing the ninth occasion of India losing its four wickets for less than 38 runs in an innings against West Indies. India added - runs for the fifth wicket in this test providing the most runs added for the fifth wicket after it had lost four wickets under 38 runs. The previous best was 27 runs after it had lost four wickets for 17 runs in second innings at Kolkata in Dec 1958.

 

VVS Laxman's 50 plus runs represent his eighth fifty against West Indies. R Draivd and PR Umrigar {ten each} have scored more half centuries vs West Indies. VVS Laxman went past SM Gavaskar and GR Viswanth who have scored seven half centuries vs West Indies.

 

VVS Laxman's 50 plus runs represent his 50th half century in tests. He became the eighth batsman to score 50 plus half eenturies in the annals of test cricket. Others are - AR Border {63}, R Dravid {59}, SR Tendulkar {59}, RT Ponting {56}, S Chanderpaul {55}, JH Kallis {54} and SR Waugh {50}

 

VVS Laxman's 50 plus runs represent his 50th half century in tests. He became the third India batsman to score 50 plus half eenturies after R Dravid and SR Tendulkar {59}, RT Ponting {56}, S Chanderpaul {55}, JH Kallis {54} and SR Waugh {50}

 

VVS Laxman and SK Raina added 117 runs for the fifth wicket in this test providing the 18th occasion of century stand for the fifth wicket in which VVS Laxman was one of the partners against various oppositions. This stand provides the fifth such occasion against West Indies.  The other four occasions are - 105 runs with R Dravid at Mumbai in Oct 2002, 119 with R Dravid at Georgetown in Apr 2002, 149 runs with SC Ganguly at Port of Spain in Apr 2002 and 214 runs with SR Tendulkar in Oct 2002.

VVS Laxman and SK Raina added 117 plus runs for the fifth wicket in this test providing the 91sth occasion of century stand by Indian batsmen against West Indies. This stand provides the 14th occasion of a three figure partnership for the fifth wicket by Indian batsmen against West Indies.

 

VVS Laxman {85} and SK Raina {53} scored fifties in this test providing the 258th and 259th occasion of Indian batsmen scoring fifties against West Indies.

 

VVS Laxman completed 8000 runs of his test career when he was on 85 in this test. He became the 22nd batsman in the annals of test cricket to score 8000 plus runs. He is the fourth Indian batsman to reach the mile stone. Others are - SR Tendulkar {14692}, R Dravid {12220} and SM Gavaskar {10122}

 

VVS Laxman completed 1000 runs against West Indies in West Indies when he was on 85. He is the fourth Indian batsman to reach the mile stone. Others are - R Dravid {1417}, SM Gavaskar {1404} and PR Umrigar {1005}
 

AB Barath took three catches in this innings providing the 18th occasion of a West Indian fieldsman taking three or more catches in an innings against India.

CS Baugh effected his second stumping when he dismissed Praveen Kumar for 12 in this test. His first stumping dismissal was against Australia at Port of Spain in April 2003 when he had stumped RT Ponting of MN Samuels for 206

LMPL Simmons was caught by MS Dhoni which game him 22 dismissals against West Indies. He went past KS More who had effected 21 dismissals. Only SMH Kirmani who has 36 dismissals is ahead of MS Dhoni as on the first day of this test.
