Second Test: India vs Australia at Bangalore: Day 1 highlights

- India capped CA Pujara for this Test. He became the 266th cricketer to represent India in Tests. He is 37th Indian Cricketer to make his Test debut against Australia.

 

- Australia capped PR George for this Test. He became the 416th cricketer to represent Australia in Tests. He is the 46th Australian cricketer to make Test debut against India.

 

- RT Ponting won the toss in this Test providing the 39th occasion of an Australian captain winning the toss against India.

 

- PR George and CA Pujara became the 20th and 21st cricketers to make their Test debut in a Test at Bangalore.

 

- CA Pujara became the eighth Indian cricketer to make Test debut in a Test at Bangalore. Others are - HS Kanitkar vs West Indies in Nov 1974, Yajurvindra Singh vs England in Jan 1977, NS Yadav vs Australia in Sep 1979, RMH Binny vs Pakistan in Nov 1979, Harbhajan Singh vs Australia in Mar 1998, N Chopra vs South Africa at Bangalore in Mar 2000 and M Kaif vs South Africa in Mar 2000.

 

- CA Pujara became the third Indian cricketer to make debut against Australia at Bangalore. Others are - NS Yadav in Sep 1979 and Harbhajan Singh in Mar 1998.

 

- PR George became the fifth Australian cricketer to make his debut against India at Bangalore. Others are - AC Dale in Mar 1998, DS Lehmann in Mar 1998, MJ Clarke iin Oct 2004 and CL White in Oct 2008.

 

- RT Ponting has captained Australia in ten Tests against India prior to the start of the Bangalore Test. Bangalore Test is his eleventh Test. By leading Australia against India in the second Test at Bangalore, RT Ponting now shares the record with AR Border who has led Australia against India in eleven Tests.

 

- RT Ponting became the first Australian cricketer to represent Australia in 25 Tests against India. Bangalore Test is his 25th Test. He became the fourth cricketer to appear in 25 or more Tests against India. Others are - Javed Miandad of Pakistan {28 Tests}, CH Lloyd of West Indies {28 Tests} and IVA Richards of West Indies {28 Tests}.

 

- RT Ponting was playing his 250th innings when he came to bat at the fall of the first wicket on the first day of this Test. He became the third Australian batsman to play 250 Test innings. Others are - AR Border {265} and SR Waugh {260}.

 

- RT Ponting became the fourth batsman in the annals of Test cricket to play 250 plus Test innings. Others are - SR Tendulkar {278}, AR Border {265} and SR Waugh {260}.

 

- R Dravid took his 198th catch when he caught SM Katich of Harbhajan Singh for 43 in Australia's first innings. It was his 47th catch against Australia. It was his 94th catch on home soil. He is on par with SP Fleming, BC Lara and RT Ponting who have pouched 94 catches on home soil. DPMD Jayawardene {101}, MA Taylor {97} and JH Kallis {96} are the other threee fielders who have taken more catches on home soil.

 

- Harbhajan Singh-R Dravid - bowler-fielder combination has accounted for 48 dismissals including the dismissal of SM Katich in this Test. Muralitharan-DPMD Jayawadrene {77} and A Kumble-R Dravid {55} and SK Warne-MA Taylor {55} are the three bowler-fielder combination to dismiss 50 plus batsmen.

 

- SR Watson and SM Katich added 99 runs for the first wicket in this Test providing the 14th occasion of an opening partnership of 99 runs in the annals of Test cricket. This partnership provides the fifth occasion of such a partnership against India. The other four occasions are - 99 runs between MR Bynoe and CC Hunte of West Indies at Chennai in Jan 1967, 99 runs between WM Lawry and RB Simpson of Australia at Adelaide in Dec 1967, 99 runs between AB de Villiers and GC Smith of South Africa at Durban in Dec 2006 and 99 runs between TM Dilshan and NT Paranvitana of Sri Lanka at Col-SSC in Jul 2010.

 

- SR Watson and SM Katich added 99 runs for the first wicket in this Test providing the second occasion of Australian openers posting a partnership of 99 runs. The other occasion was the 99 runs between WM Lawry and RB Simpson of Australia at Adelaide in Dec 1967.

 

- RT Ponting's half century - 77 - in this Test was his 14th fifty against India. He is now on par with ML Hayden who also has 14 fifties to his credit. RT Ponting went past AR Border who had 13 fifties on his way to 14th fifty. Both RT Ponting and ML Hayden have scored six centuries and eight half centuries against India.

 

- RT Ponting's half century - 77 - in this Test represent his 93rd fifty - 39 centuries and 54 half centuries.

 

- RT Ponting half century - 77 - in this Test represents his 52nd fifty as Australian captain. He now holds the record for most fifties by an Australian captain. He went past AR Border's record of 51 fifties. RT Ponting's 52 fifties represent not only an Australian record but also a world record for most fifties by a Test captain.

 

- MJ North completed 1000 runs of his Test career when he was on 9 during his knock in this innings. He became the 91st Australian cricketer to score 1000 plus Test runs.

 

- RT Ponting was dismissed lbw for 77 of the bowling of SK Raina in this Test providing the 40th occasion of his being dismissed lbw in a Test innings. He is on par with AJ Stewert of England who has been dismissed lbw on 40 occasions. Only SR Tendulkar {51} and GA Gooch {50} are the batsmen who have been dismissed lbw on more occasions than RT Ponting and GA Gooch.
