2nd Test: Australia vs Pakistan at Headingley

- Salman Butt led Pakistan in this test to become the 28th captain to lead Pakistan in tests

 

Australia was dismissed for 88 in this test providing the 34th occasion of Australia being dismissed for a total of less than 100 in a test innings. This total provides he second occasion of Australia being dismissed all out for a total of less than 100 against Pakistan. The first occasion was at Karachi in Oct 1956 when they were all out for 80.

 

- MG Johnson was dismissed for a first ball for a duck in this test providing the 30th occasion of an Australian batsman collecting the first ball duck in a test innings against Pakistan. His duck provides the 232nd occasion of an Australian batsman suffering such an ignominy against various oppositions.

 

- BW Hilfenhwas was dismissed run out in this test providing the 32nd occasion of an Australian batsman dismissed run out against Pakistan.

 

- SR Watson captured 6 for 33 in this test providing the 43rd occasion of an Australian bowler capturing five or more wickets in an innings against Pakistan. It was his second five wicket haul and also his best innings figures in tests. The previous best was 5 for 40 against Pakistan at Lord’s in the first test of the ongoing series.

 

- Mohammad Aamer was dismissed for a first ball duck in this test providing the 18th occasion of a Pakistan batsman collecting the first ball duck in a test innings against Australia. It was the second such occasion for Mohammad Aamer, the first being at Melbourne in Dec 2009. He is the fourth Pakistan batsman to suffer such an ignominy on two occasions against Australia, the other three being - Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mushtaq Ahmed and Wasim Bari.

 

- Danish Kaneria was dismissed run out for 15 in this test providing the 35th occasion of a Pakistan batsman dismissed run out against Australia.

 

- SR Watson's 6 for 33 also represent the tenth occasion of an Australian bowler capturing exact six wickets against Pakistan. It also represents the second best among the ten bowlers who have bagged exact six wickets. The best bowling figures is credited to MHN Walker who had figures of 6 for 15 at Sydney in Jan 1973.

 

- RT Ponting completed 12000 runs when he was on 40 during his knock of 66 in the second innings. At the end of this test, his aggregate stood at 12026. Only SR Tendulkar is ahead of him with 13539 runs.

 

- RT Ponting's 66 in this game has the following statistical milestones attached to it

 

- It represents his 50th fifty as captain and he became the second captain in the annals of test cricket to score 50 fifties. AR Border of Australia is the other captain to score 51 fifties.

 

- It provides the 190th occasion of an Australian batsman scoring a fifty in an innings against Pakistan. This knock represents RT Ponting's 11th fifty against Pakistan and he is one of five batsmen who have scored ten or more fifties against Pakistan. Others are – AR Border {14}, GS Chappell {12}, MA Taylor {12} and JL Langer {10}.

 

- It represents his 91st fifty in tests and he now holds the record for most fifties by an Australian batsman in tests. He wrested the record from AR Border who had scored 90 fifties. Only SR Tendulkar with 102 fifties is ahead of RT Ponting.

 

- It represents his 31st half century as captain and he now shares the joint second place amongst the captains who have scored most fifties along with SP Fleming of New Zealand who also has scored 31 half century.

 

- It represents his seventh fifty as Australian captain against Pakistan. He now shares the joint second place with MA Taylor who also has scored seven fifties. GS Chappell with eight fifties owns the record for most fifties by an Australian captain against Pakistan.

 

- It represents his seventh fifty as captain against Pakistan. He now shares the joint second place with SM Gavaskar and MA Taylor who also have scored seven fifties. GS Chappell with eight fifties owns the record for most fifties by a captain against Pakistan. RT Ponting while scoring his seventh fifty against Pakistan went past England’s Ted Dexter's six fifties.

 

- RT Ponting was playing his 181st innings in the second innings of this test while playing at number three. He is on par with R Dravid who has also played 181 innings while batting at number three. RT Ponting's 66 in this test represent the 71st fifty while batting at number three. R Dravid is close behind him with 68 fifties to his credit.

 

- RT Ponting completed 9500 runs during his innings of 66 in this test and at the end of the test, his aggregate stood at 9519. He became the first batsman in the annals of test cricket to total 9500 runs while batting at number three.

 

- MJ Clarke's 77 in this test provide his 19th test half century and 33rd fifty. His knock represent his second fifty against Pakistan, the first being his 166 at Hobart in Jan 2010.

 

- MG Johnson in the first innings and MJ North in the second innings scored zeroes in this test providing the 105th and 106th occasion of an Australian batsman scoring zero in a test innings against Pakistan.

 

- Mohammad Aamer and Umar Gul scored zeroes in the first innings and providing the 129th and 130th occasion of a Pakistan batsman scoring zero in a test innings against Australia. Umar Amin’s zero in the second innings provides the 131st occasion.

 

- SPD Smith scored 77 in this test while batting at number eight providing the third occasion of an Australian batsman batting at number eight scoring a fifty against Pakistan. The other two occasions are – 75 by GRJ Matthews at Melbourne in Dec 1983 and 86 by SK Warne at Brisbane in Nov 1999.

 

- SPD was playing his second test of his career and his knock of 77 in this test represents his maiden test fifty. His previous best was 12 in the second innings at Lord's in Jul 2010 – the first test of the ongoing test series on his test debut.

 

- RT Ponting {66}, MJ Clarke {77} and SPD Smith {77} scored half centuries in this test providing the eleventh occasion of three or more Australian batsmen scoring fifties in an innings against Pakistan. This is the second such feat by Australian batsmen against Pakistan at a neutral venue. The first such feat was Col-PSS in Oct 200, when three Australian batsmen - J Langer {72}, DR Martyn {67} and AC Gilchrist {66} - had made half centuries.

 

- Imran Farhats's 67 in this test represent the 30th occasion of a Pakistan opening batsman scoring a half century against Australia. His knock also represents the 120th occasion of a Pakistan batsman scoring a half century against Australia.

 

- SR Watson's 6 for 33 in this test was in a losing cause providing the fifth occasion of an Australian bowler’s five wicket haul going in vain. The other four occasions are - 7 for 187 by RJ Bright at Karachi in Feb 1980, 7 for 187 by B Yardley at Melbourne in Dec 1981, 5 for 89 by SK Warne at Karachi in Sep 1994 and 5 for  49 by CJ McDermott at Sydney in Nov 1995.

 

- Australia's 349 in the third innings of this test provide the seventh occasion of Australia scoring 300 plus in the third innings of a test against Pakistan. The seven occasions are - 425 at Melbourne in Dec 1972, 330 at Faisalabad in Sep 1982, 306 at Hobart in Nov 1995, 390 at Karachi in Oct 1998, 381 at Sydney in Jan 2010, 334 at Lord’s in Jul 2010 and 349 at Leeds in Jul 2010.

 

- Australia has won four tests, lost two tests and drawn one test out of the seven occasions when they totalled 300 plus runs in the third innings of a test match against Pakistan.

 

- The two tests which were lost are – Faisalabad test in Sep 1982 {lost by an innings and three runs} and this test at Leeds in Jul 2010 {lost by three wickets wickets}.
