1st Test: SL vs IND at Galle: First day highlights

- Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat providing the ninth occasion of Sri Lanka doing so against India in its 33 tests.

 

- India capped A Mithun for this test. He became the 263rd cricketer to represent India in tests. He became the 13th Indian cricketer to make his test debut against Sri Lanka. He is the sixth Indian cricketer to make his test debut against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Others are - LS Rajput and S Viswanath at Col-SSC in Aug 85, NM Kulakarni at Col-RPS on Aug 97, DS Mohanty at Col-SSC in Aug 97 and A Nehra at Col-SSC in Feb 99.

 

- A Mithun became the fourth bowler to don the India colours after performing the hat-trick on debut in Ranji Trophy. The other three are -VB Ranjane, SA Ankola and  J Srinath. A Mithun became the 20th bowler to earn India cap after achieving the hat trick in Ranji Trophy or achieving the hat trick after representing India.

 

- TM Dilshan became the first victim of debutant A Mithun. He was caught by wicket keeper by MS Dhoni for 25.

 

- NT Paranvitana and KC Sangakkara scored 110 not out and 103 in the first innings of this test providing the 36th and 37th occasion of a Sri Lankan batsman scoring a hundred against India.

 

- KC Sangakkara's 103 in this test represent his fourth hundred against India. The other three hundreds are - 105* at Galle in Aug 2001, 144 at Col-PSS and 137 at Mumbai {BS}. With four hundreds to his credit, KC Sangakkara became the third Sri Lankan batsman to score four or more hundreds against India. Others are - PA  de Silva {05} and DPMD Jayawardene {05}.

 

- KC Sangakkara's 103 represent the fifth occasion of a Sri Lankan captain scoring a hundred against India. The other four occasions are - 124 by LRD Mendis at Kandy in 14.09.85, 111 by ST Jayasuriya at Galle in Aug 2001, 136 by DPMD Jaywardene at Col-SSC in Jul 2008 and 137 by KC Sangakkara at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009.

 

- KC Sangakkara earned the distinction of becoming the only captain to score two hundreds against India - 137 at Mumbai {BS} in Dec 2009 and 103 at Galle in Jul 2010.

 

- KC Sangakkara's 103 represent the 30th occasion of a Sri Lankan captain scoring hundreds against various oppositions. This knock represents the fourth hundred by KC Sangakkara while leading Sri Lanka. The four hundreds are - 130* vs Pakistan at Col-SSC in Jul 2009, 109 vs New Zealand at Col-SSC, 137 at Mumbai {BS} vs India in Dec 2009 and 103 vs India at Galle in Jul 2010.

 

- With four hundreds to his credit, KC Sangkkara became the fourth Sri Lankan captain to score four or more hundreds. Others are - DPMD Jayawardene {12}, ST Jayasuriya {05} and MS Atapattu {04}.

 

- KC Sangakkara's 103 in this test represent his 22nd hundred of his test career. Other Sri Lankan batsmen to score 20 plus hundreds are - DPMD Jayawardene {27} and PA de Silva {20}.

 

- KC Sangakkara with his 103 which was his 21st hundred while batting at number three went past DG Bradman's record of 20 hundreds at number three. Only RT Ponting {32} and R Dravid {23} are ahead of KC Sangakkara in terms of hundreds scored while batting at number three.

 

- KC Sangakkara had an aggregate of 6916 runs while batting at number three prior to this test. He completed 7000 runs when he was on 84 and at the end of the first innings his aggregate stood at 7019. He became the third batsman in the annals of test cricket to aggregate 7000 plus runs while batting at number three. The other two batsmen are RT Ponting {9421} and R Dravid {8970}.

 

- NT Paranavitana and KC Sangakkara added 181 runs for the second wicket providing the 31st occasion of Sri Lankan batsmen posting a three figure partnership against India. This stand represents the sixth occasion of a three figure partnership against India for the sixth wicket. The other five occasions are - 576 for the second wicket between ST Jayasuriya and RS Mahanama at Col-RPS in Aug 97, 133 runs between BSM Warnapura and KC Sangakkara at Galle in Jul 2008, 115 runs between MS Atapattu and HDPK Dharmasena at Mumbai {WS} in Dec 1997, 115 runs between TM Dilshan and KC Sangakkara at Ahmedabad in Nov 2009 and 104 runs between MS Atapattu and RS Mahanama at Mohali in Nov 1997.

 

- NT Paranavitana and KC Sangakkara added 181 runs for the second wicket providing the fourth occasion of Sri Lankan batsmen posting a three figure partnership for the second wicket against various oppositions at Galle. The other three occasions are - 133 runs between BSM Warnapura and KC Sangkkara vs India in Jul 2008, 109 runs between MS Atapattu and KC Sangkkara vs West Indies in Nov 2001 and 101 runs between TM Dilshan and KC Sangakkara vs New Zealand in Aug 2009. It is interesting to note that KC Sangakkara is one of the partners in all these four three figure partnerships.

 

- NT Paranavitana and KC Sangakkara added 181 runs for the second wicket providing the record three figure partnership for the second wicket by Sri Lankan batsman against various oppositions at Galle.  The previous best was the 133 runs between BSM Warnapura and KC Sangkkara vs India in Jul 2008.

 

- NT Paranavitana's 110 not out in this test represent the 11th occasion of an opening batsman scoring a hundred against Sri Lanka. His hundred in this test represent the second occasion of a opening batsman scoring a hundred at Galle. ST Jayasuriya is the other opening batsman who had made 111 in Aug 2001.

 

- NT Paravanavitana registered his maiden test hundred when he made 110 not out. His previous best was 73 against Pakistan at Col-SSC in Jul 2009.
