The franchise of Delhi is owned by the renowned GMR group. Despite the presence of senior players from various countries, the team failed to make it big in any of the previous editions. They reached their lowest ebb in the fourth season, when the entire team was re-shuffled and new players arrived, with Virender Sehwag and David Warner as the only experienced players. As a result, the side finished at the bottom of the table, with nothing much to its credit.
However, with the inclusion of stalwarts like Mahela Jayawardena and Kevin Pietersen, the Daredevils hoped for a change of fortunes as they geared up for the fifth edition in 2012. Their fortunes did turn around, as a resurgent Delhi stormed into the top position after dominating an entire season with an all-round performance. But fate had other plans as they were quickly eliminated by a strong Kolkata side in the playoffs, thus halting their supreme run of form in the IPL. They were once touted as the new champions, but fell just short of any such result.
