Son of a coal-mine worker, Umesh Yadav was once aiming to become a policeman. He started considering cricket at the age of 19 and has never looked back since then. He represents the state of Vidarbha in first-class cricket.
Yadav usually bowls from wide of the crease and his delivery angles into the right-hand batsman. His capability of bowling at a speed of 140 kph and producing effective bouncers helped him claim 20 wickets at 14.60 in his debut game for Vidarbha in the 2008-09 season. He attracted eyeballs with his pace while playing for the Delhi in the 2010 IPL season. Soon after, he made it to the big stage when he was sent to the West Indies to replace injured Praveen Kumar for the World Twenty20 tournament. In the same year, he was included in India’s Test squad for the South African tour. His ODI debut came against Zimbabwe in 2010.
The Delhi handed him another contract in 2011 but his major breakthrough came when he was selected for his debut Test series against West Indies in India. He did well on debut in partnership with Ishant Sharma and picked up two important second innings wickets after going wicket-less in the first innings. He came back stronger in the second match of the series though and picked up seven wickets. His sprightly pace is encouraging for India who seem to lack genuine fast bowlers and his pace remains an asset to Indian cricket.
