Profile
His performances in the 2008 Under-19 WC earned him rave reviews; with many convinced that he would be India’s big future bet. Ravindra Jadeja backed it up with steady performances both in IPL and domestic cricket and at 20, became one of the lucky few to have stepped into international cricket, barely out of his teens.
Glimpses of Jadeja’s prodigious talent were evident in his debut first-class game where he scored 53 for West Zone. He was consequently a member of the 2006 Under-19 WC side which reached the finals and again partook in the 2008 edition; wherein his bowling performance of 2-25 against Pakistan finals was crucial in India’s victory. A good stint in the IPL with the Rajasthan and an impressive all-round show in the 2008-09 season prompted selectors to hand him an ODI debut against Sri Lanka. Though India lost, the left-hander impressed with an unbeaten 60. Since then, he continued to feature regularly in the side barring Tests, with consistent performances.
As a batsman, Jadeja is an accumulator but it is his tight line and length as a spinner that makes him an ideal fifth bowler in shorter formats.
In 2011, Jadeja was bought by the Kochi to play in the fourth edition of the IPL. However, the following year he was signed by the defending champions Chennai for 2 million $, making him the costliest buy of the 2012 season.
