Rana Naved-ul-Hasan gave up his first love, hockey for a sport he loved and respected much more, cricket. He was drafted into the Pakistani ODI team straight after the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, despite having little backing.

A right-arm medium-fast bowler, Naved’s change of pace and the ability to bowl a reverse-swinging yorker is his primary asset. Perfect line and length coupled with giving nothing less than 100 percent on the field made him stand out from the rest. He was a vital cog in the ODI set up, but his Test appearances were relatively sporadic and unfruitful. Injury came knocking in 2006 but he managed to hold on till the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup. A disastrous opening match resulted in his exclusion from the side immediately though his club, Sussex persisted with him. Naved’s omission from Pakistan’s plans was further vindicated when he wasn’t one the centrally contracted players in 2007.

A two-year contract with Yorkshire followed, but Naved joined hands with the rebel league and strained his relationship with Pakistan cricket. However, he was soon brought back to the ODI fold after being pardoned by the PCB. In late 2009, he was part of the Pakistani squad that returned after a horrible tour of Australia, failing to register a single win. Naved, along with a few others, was banned following a PCB inquiry. But while the others had their ban overturned, Naved struggled to come back. He was then completely out of national reckoning and opted to return to domestic cricket. Representing the Sialkot Stallions in the Twenty20 arena, he was part of the squad that was invited to participate in the 2012 Champions League T20.
