Profile
Mark Gillespie is a right-arm medium pacer who is a specialist bowler at the death. He has plenty of variations in his bowling which makes him a difficult bowler to hit in the slog overs. Despite his solid performance in domestic cricket, he found it hard to make it into the team because of Shane Bond’s dominance early on.
He was in New Zealand’s 2007 World Cup squad but a viral infection in his right shoulder restricted his campaign. With a run-up similar to Bob Willis, Gillespie has been a dominant performer in the domestic circuit. Gillespie is also an excellent exponent of reverse-swing bowling. With Bond's switch to the ICL, new gates opened for the right-arm seamer to nail a permanent place in the Kiwi team but he failed to do so.
After a four-year absence, Gillespie was recalled in the national squad for the second Test against South Africa in 2012 with the selectors deciding to give Southee a break. Gilliespie showed good form in the domestic circuit and provides the Kiwi side with a strong and reliable bowling option.
