Profile
Consistent performances notwithstanding, New Zealand’s experimentation policy just ahead of the 2011 World Cup led to Luke Woodcock’s call-up to the T20I side for the series against Pakistan in December 2010.
The Wellington-born player made his first-class debut way back in 2001 but it was to be a number of years before he started playing to his full potential. It began with some fine all-round performances in the 2008-09 season with the following year leaving little doubts that he had come of age. In an otherwise miserable tenure for Wellington, the all-rounder proved to be the shining light as he went on to score prolifically in all formats of the game, the likes of which included a mammoth, unbeaten 220 in a first-class game against Central Districts.
Woodcock also proved his utility as an attacking left arm spinner and two years of steady performances were finally rewarded with a call-up to the national side. The vast domestic experience will hold him in good stead as he takes his first baby steps in international cricket but beyond that only performances will determine if he manages to survive at the highest level.
