Profile
Denesh Ramdin is a wicket-keeper batsman who many others saw as the long term replacement for Jeff Dujon and was also being touted as a future captain. Although he has failed to live up to the expectations, with age on his side, the Trinidadian is expected to come good in time.
Originally a fast bowler, Ramdin at 13, decided to give up on his bowling to concentrate fully on wicket-keeping. He soon became an important member of the West Indies’ Under 19 sides before being a surprise inclusion in the national squad for their 2005 Sri Lankan tour. Noted for his agility behind the stumps during that series, Ramdin did his reputation no harm with a 71 against Australia ‘Down Under’ followed by a fighting 62 against India. He made it to West Indies’ 2007 ICC CWC squad despite enduring a miserable 2006-07 season. His terrible form continued even post the World Cup but his immaculate glove work coupled with lack of competition meant that he could hold on to his place in the side. In 2009, he scored his maiden century against England and with time, also became West Indies' number one keeper in all three formats.
However, poor form pushed him out of the side but he returned in 2012 in the Test series against England. After two ordinary Tests, Ramdin rose to the occasion in the third, scoring an unbeaten 107. While acknowledging his ton, he flashed a note with “Yeah Viv, Talk Nah” inscribed on it for Viv Richards, who had earlier criticized Ramdin for his poor form on tour.
