Profile
A one-of-a-kind fast bowling prospect, Tim Southee has shown significant promise as the man who may well take over the mantle as New Zealand’s premier bowler in the not-so-distant future.
The speedster first grabbed eyeballs in the 2007-08 season when he picked up 33 first-class wickets at an average below 24. His performances saw him become one of the youngest Kiwi players to debut internationally at 19. Southee’s exploits in the 2008 Under-19 WC assured that he was fast-tracked to New Zealand’s Test side. The big stage held the teenager few nerves as he ripped through England’s top order in the 1st innings of his debut Test, grabbing a five-wicket haul and also showed his value with the bat smashing 77 off just 40 balls in the 2nd innings. In the same year, he also made his ODI debut scalping 16 wickets from his initial six games.
A wonderful bowler to have at the death with his pinpoint yorkers, Southee is still in the process of learning the tricks of the trade. However, given his abundant talent, one can be rest assured that in Tim Southee, the world can watch out for a fast-bowling icon in the making.
