Profile
He has the stature and psychology of a fast bowler and is also not shy of the odd confrontation. But for all his towering height, natural confidence and Barbadian heritage, the huge Sulieman Benn is not a fast bowler but a left arm spinner.
After excelling in the 2007-08 ‘Carib Beer Cup’ West Indies came calling for Benn and he made his Test debut against Sri Lanka, bagging 3 wickets in his first Test. Soon after, he made his ODI debut against the same team but was dropped owing to poor form. Early in 2009, he picked up 8 wickets against England in the 1st Test and was instrumental in West Indies winning the Test with an innings to spare. The same year, he ripped through Australia’s top order at Adelaide and also was West Indies’ standout bowler in the 2010 home series against South Africa.
Benn may not be a huge turner of the ball but it is the height from which he delivers and the bounce that he generates which causes most batsmen problems. His batting skills are not renowned and he is also not one of the most mobile on the field. Altercations in the past have tainted his career but the left-armer’s determination and passion towards the game has made him one of the most reliable bowlers in the team.
