Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been the backbone of the West Indies batting line-up for almost a decade now. He is the first East Indian to play 100 Tests for the West Indies. Chanderpaul made his debut way back in 1994 and scored a handy half-century in that match. He has grown from strength to strength since.The southpaw is a gritty customer at the crease and scores most of his runs straight down the ground. He rarely seems to play in the ‘V’ or off the front foot but has enough shots to make up for the deficiency. With an orthodox batting stance, Chanderpaul holds the ability to marshal the tail-enders. His off-the-wall stance and technique makes it clear that there is life beyond the coaching handbook. Most of his tons have come by batting with the lower order batsman. The Guyanese batsman’s stint as captain was not a happy one and eventually he resigned as skipper in 2006.
