Learnt his cricket from his father, who played in the Bolton league, he played for Smithill School where Ronnie Irani was a student before him.
Spotted by Lancashire in a local league match in 2002 where he took four wickets and made 20 runs. Lancashire offered him a contract the following season.
Cousin of the British boxer Amir Khan and known by his team-mates as "King".
