Profile
He scored a blistering knock of 84 in his debut Test innings, he topped the averages in his first away series. Ramnaresh Sarwan’s cricketing career got off to a flying start, only for the betterment of West Indies cricket.
With a technically sound footwork and a confident stroke play, Sarwan went on to show his composure against India in 2000-01 and played some fine knocks before he quickly took over as the vice-captain to Brian Lara in 2003. Sarwan had a marvelous series against the Proteas in 2003-04, where he averaged almost 100 runs a Test. He had a consistent run of high scores against Bangladesh and low scores against England. A berth in the NatWest Series final followed by a win in the ICC Champions Trophy, were two of the strongest examples of the Guyanese player’s contribution to his team. Just like any other cricketer, Sarwan too, went through a lean patch with injuries and bad form that kept him out of action for a long time. However, the World Cup that followed was a golden opportunity and he grabbed it with both hands, scoring some wonderful performances. Captaincy followed as Brian Lara retired, but Sarwan still made limited appearances in 2007. Upon his return in 2008, he was demoted to the vice-captain’s post as Gayle became the new skipper, but that did not deter him from shining in his brilliant form.
