Born in Harare, Prosper Utseya showcased his talent and skill at the young age of 15. He has grown with time as a player and has turned out to be one of Zimbabwe’s most valuable players in recent times.
Utseya started his first-class career in 2001-02 and impressed immediately with a string of decent performances. His bowling skills combined with his talent with the bat saw him push through to the Zimbabwean A and the Under-19 sides early in his career. In 2004, he was selected for the national side to play against Sri Lanka at the age of 19. His stint with Manicaland later that year strengthened his ability as a bowler when he went onto take his first five-wicket haul in first class cricket. The year 2006 was a special one for Utseya as he was handed over the charge of the national side and took over the captaincy from Terry Duffin.
The all-rounder has been prolific in the domestic circuit especially with the ball. He has helped his side clinch the Logan Cup with his spectacular bowling performances in the 2008-09 season. Utseya has been a prominent figure in the Zimbabwe line up but after his country’s ousting in the 2010 World T20 he decided to do away with the pressures of captaincy and concentrate on his game. Utseya is one of Zimbabwe’s finest talents and has surely a big role to play in the country’s success in the world of cricket.
