Profile
Praveen Kumar is a man with many abilities. He is fast-medium pacer, a hard-hitting batsman and an excellent ground fielder. His tally of 90 wickets in his first two domestic seasons earned him a call into the India A side. He excelled for India A with the bat and ball and was eventually picked into the Indian team. He took 10 wickets in his first five matches, including a four-for against Australia. He lacks the pace of a genuine fast bowler but makes up for that with controlled movement in the air and off the pitch, on both sides of the wicket. In many ways, he is like a fast-spinner and on wickets which assist swing, he can be deadly and deceptive. It’s ironical that India now posses a pool of four or five regular seamers and Praveen often has to sit out to make way for a genuine paceman when the wickets don’t offer him support. In recent times, he has also shown a keen interest in batting – a trait which was well exhibited at the second season of the IPL, where his team, Bangalore Royal Challengers, came runners up.
