Paddy Upton was born in Johannesburg in 1968 and played just two first class games for Western Province. He shot to fame with his coaching skills when he joined good friend and former South African player, Gary Kirsten as an assistant coach with the Indian cricket team that won the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, and later took up mental conditioning with the South African cricket team. Upton was involved with the South African team earlier as well during the Bob Woolmer era as a team strategist when Hansie Cronje was the skipper of the side.

He was appreciated for aiding Jacques Kallis to overcome personal issues post the demise of his father and got him to perfect well being to play some of his best cricket in his career. He was deeply influenced by Indian philosophy and this along with his coaching experience earned him the job of head coach for Rajasthan in the 2013 IPL for its sixth season.
