Kanishka Alvitigala started his cricketing career with his local team Homagama MV and went on to play the sport at college level. The tall right-arm fast bowler managed to pick wickets consistently and his talent was recognized by Colombo Colts. He continued his progress in the club cricket scene, with the most eye catching display coming against Nondescripts Cricket Club, in the Under-23 semi final, where he took a five-wicket haul.
With injury to Nuwan Pradeep, Kanishka was drafted into the national side touring South Africa in 2011 for the second Test, on the basis of 51 wickets in 25 first-class matches. The 6 feet 3 inches tall lad bowls around 140 kph and has represented Sri Lanka A as well.
