Profile

On first sight one would dismiss Josh Hazlewood as a fast bowler who belongs to a league of Glenn McGrath clones. But, even with a description that is now a dime a dozen in Australia, Hazlewood’s talent is worth a mention. Such is his visible potential that he made his ODI debut aged just 19, a rare phenomenon; more so for an Australian, who belongs to a system that believes that their cricketers should go through the grind of domestic cricket before making their mark internationally.

Hazlewood started playing at the age of seven and was part of the Under 17 and Under 19 state teams and also made it to the ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in 2008 at a tender age of 17. In the same year, New South Wales offered him a rookie contract, even though he had not even played for a Sydney grade club. He had a brilliant ICC Under 19 Cricket World Cup in 2010, bagging 13 wickets and was instrumental in Australia’s win in the final with his four-wicket haul. In less than two years after his domestic debut, he made his ODI debut against England knocking over Craig Kieswetter to claim his maiden ODI wicket. In 2011, he was grabbed by the Sydney Sixers ahead of their inaugural Big Bash League, followed by the Champions League T20 next year.
