Profile
At a time when New Zealand cricket was plagued with injury concerns, Wellington speedster Iain O’Brien made his entry into the national team after being called up to the Test team in 2005 against Australia.
O’Brien had an impressive State Championship that season, taking 20 wickets at a decent average of 26.55. However, he failed to make any impact in his debut series and was hence sidelined for quite a while. Later, in the 2006-07 season, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 34 wickets in the State Championship, still not being able to strike at the international level. He finally rose to prominence in South Africa in late 2007, when he replaced an injured Kyle Mills.
In 2009, O’Brien announced unexpected retirement from international cricket to spend more time with his wife, moved to England and joined Middlesex in 2010. However, he announced his comeback to the domestic season in 2011-12, before finally calling it quits.
