When South Africa came back into the fold
10 November 1991 is a historic and one of the most emotional days in cricket history because it was when South Africa played their first international match for 21 years, against India in Calcutta. South African cricket had been ostracised since 1970, but four months after rejoining the ICC they began a speedily arranged tour with this one-dayer. India won the match by three wickets and the series 2-1; however this was one of those situations when the enormity of the occasion dwarfed the scoreline. For the record, there were over 90,000 spectators at the Eden Gardens to welcome South Africa back into the international cricket fold. South Africa captain Clive Rice, whose only official internationals, came in this short series said after the Calcutta match: "I know how Neil Armstrong felt when he stood on the moon."
