Walking in to bat with the score 9-4 (soon to be 17-5) against rookies Zimbabwe, India captain Kapil Dev smashed his way to 175 not out (138, 16 fours, 6 sixes) in the World Cup match at Tunbridge Wells, June 19, 1983. It was not only the highest score in a World Cup game at the time, but also the new ODI record, beating Glenn Turner's 171 for New Zealand against East Africa.
