The Good Shepherd
David Shepherd (27 December 1940 – 27 October 2009) was one of the most widely respected umpires of international cricket. A former cricketer from Devon, England, Shepherd played 282 First Class games and 183 limited-overs games. He later umpired in 92 Tests and 172 ODIs. He was known for his accurate decision making as well as enforcement of fairplay.
He wasn't afraid from chiding out-of-line cricketing stars and was often seen wagging a finger at them, telling them to behave. For this, he was loved and respected by players and spectators.
Shepherd was the only player to have officiated in six World Cups, including three finals. He was also known for hopping and skipping when a team's total reached the Nelsen ... 111, 222 and so on.
He last umpired in an international game in 2005, and passed away of lung cancer in 2009.
