When Tugga Called It Quits
6 January 2004 was the last day of former Australia captain Steve Waugh's 168-Test career in which he scored 10927 runs, including 32 centuries at an average of 51.06, and took 92 wickets. It was only fitting the legendary Waugh play his final Test, at his home ground, the SCG. Sachin Tendulkar's 241* and VVS Laxman's 178 as India got to 705 for 7 before bowling Australia out for 474 with Waugh scoring 40. India opted not to enforce the follow-on, and had Australia in some strife at 196 for 4 in their second innings chasing 443; but a typically gritty knock of 80 from Waugh ensured the match would end in the anticipated draw.
