The Gujarat government has clarified that it would implement the Supreme Court's directive on the appointment of Justice R A Mehta as the state Lokayukta at the earliest. This statement was issued today consequent to the apex court upholding the appointment of Justice Mehta as the Lokayukta by the Governor of the state, much to the displeasure of the Narendra Modi-headed government. Reacting to this development, Gujarat's Law Minister, Bhupindersinh Chudasama said a detailed reaction on the issue would only be given after studying the judgement in detail. Meanwhile, Justice N Santosh Hegde, former judge of the apex court hailed the Supreme Court's decision by contending when the state government fails to appoint a suitable person as Lokayukta the Governor of the state has the privilege and pleasure to appoint former High Court or Supreme Court judge to the designated post.
