Bangladesh recently awarded the 'Friends of Bangladesh' award, to Colonel (retd) Ashok Tara, a retired officer of the Indian Army, for his outstanding contribution to the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. Col Tara personally rescued Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rehman's family including present Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina from the hands of the Pakistani forces. A team led by Colonel Tara rescued them on December 17, a day after the Pakistani Army surrendered to the joint Bangladesh-India command in Dhaka. less
