The Supreme Court has decided to review the definition of Juvenile in the Juvenile Justice Act. The Apex Court has issued notice to the Centre on a PIL seeking lowering of age of juvenile to 16 years from the present 18 years. The Court said that, it needs to be considered if the importance of an offence committed by a juvenile has to be examined from his age point of view and whether he should be tried as an adult in heinous offences. The development has come in the wake of the Delhi gangrape, where one of the main accused happens to be a minor. The minor was allegedly the most brutal during the horrific gangrape which claimed the victim's life. The Attorney General will assist the court in reviewing the Juvenile Act.
