Kolkata, located on the east bank of River Hoogly, is a growing metropolitan city with a blend of the traditional and the modern. It is home to some 5 million people. The city's historical, cultural and economic significance attracts many, including those from the northeast. Deben Dewan, who hails from Guwahati in Assam, came to Kolkata in 1984 to study arts. While studying at Rabindra Bharati University, he fell in love with the city and decided to stay permanently. He now depicts the city's magnificence through his brush. To promote unity in the region, he organized a series of art exhibitions of young and eminent artists, titled 'Friendship' from 1990 to 1999 in Kolkata and Guwahati. less
