Glimpses of the Goa Carnival 2013
The Goa Carnival 2013, which concluded on February 12, turned the seaside state into a giant fairground. Music, dance, feasting and merry-making brought the streets and beaches alive, attracting tourists from everywhere.
First started in 1961 at the end of the Portuguese occupation, it is essentially a Portuguese festival and reflected the customs and traditions of the colonizers. Today, however, all of Goa comes together for the carnival, making it one of the most eagerly awaited festivals and one that sets cash registers ringing at bars, restaurants and hotels all over Goa. The festival is observed before the start of Lent, during which time devout Christians abstain from eating meat and other rich foods.
