Chatra is one of the worst Naxal affected districts of Jharkhand. The Naxals have in the past forced locals to cultivate poppy to fund their operations in the region. However, with the decline of Naxal activities in the area the situation has changed for the better. The farmers are now engaged in growing vegetables. The efforts of the state government and agriculture department to encourage people to take up vegetable production have been very successful.
