Lawyer of one of the accused in the infamous Delhi gang rape, Manohar Lal Sharma, has sought an impartial trial for his client, Mukesh Singh, as he fears that the police might kill him in a fake encounter. Sharma has apprehensions, as to whether there could be an impartial trial in the case, if the judge presiding over the case is from Delhi. The case shines a light on a widespread problem of violence against women but also the failure of the criminal justice system to bring the guilty to justice in a country where official statistics show a rape is reported every 20 minutes. According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, the number of rape cases reported in 2012 is the highest in the last 10 years. less
