Every year the small outback town of Charters Towers in North Queensland hosts a cricket carnival named 'The Goldfield Ashes'. In 1948 the Charters Towers cricket Association extended an invitation to six teams to play on Foundation Day. From those six teams the carnival has grown to over 200 teams competing in 2012 making ot the largest cricket carnival in the Southern Hemisphere. Games are played on 58 different playing fileds including some which are privately owned.
