This phase saw some sparring between the two teams, with Lanka seeking to strengthen its base in preparation for a final assault, while Australia focused on keeping it tight through rapid rotation of bowlers and a better fielding effort than in the previous tranche of ten overs.
Watson appeared to have realized that he only had one reliable wicket-taking option, and used Pattinson in short two overs bursts, chiseling a batsman out, giving the bowler rest, and bringing him back on for another go. Thus, having taken the quick bowler off after he got the wicket of Sangakkara, Watson brought him back in the 37th – and in the 39th, Pattinson got rid of Lanka’s best hope of getting to a big score. Chandimal has had a dream run this CB Series, aggregating the highest of all batsmen in the three teams; while he is yet to register a century in the series, his 383 runs at 63.8 and a strike rate of 82.3 has made him the pivotal figure in the line-up.
He was looking good for a big one when ambition got the better of him – looking to go straight and high to a Pattinson ball not short enough to get under, Chandimal only managed to hole out to deepish mid off, ending a stylish knock that was worth more than the 75 that registers against his name. His exit meant the Lankans had to throttle back and regroup, and the batting side ended on 190/4 as the innings turned into the straight, having put on 46 runs during this phase for the loss of Chandimal.
