Australia Overs 1-10:
Somewhere around the end of the 5th over of the Australian chase, an 'all employees' alert went out from BCCI headquarters, and it read, 'Right, boys, any shopping left over you can do from the duty free zone at the airport – pack your bags ASAP.' Somewhere around the end of the 5th over of the Australian chase, an 'all employees' alert went out from BCCI headquarters, and it read, 'Right, boys, any shopping left over you can do from the duty free zone at the airport – pack your bags ASAP.' Okay, we made that up – but such a message would not have been inappropriate as Australia, at the start of its chase, slumped rapidly to 26/3 at the end of 5 overs. Lasith Malinga began the damage in the 3rd over, when a ball on length stopped a shade even as David Warner was well into an agricultural swat.
Though ball flew off bat face, Perera at a shortish cover pulled off a good reflex catch to send back the free-scoring opener. One ball later, Kulasekhara got into the act, hitting the line of the stumps from over the wicket and straightening it on Matthew Wade, defeating his attempted stroke and nailing him on the back pad. An over later, Malinga struck again with one of those balls that come along once in a while – the type that does its damndest to not get a wicket, but gets it anyways.
It was short, it was wide, it had 'hit me' on it in neon letters – but Peter Forrest over-hit it, aiming an enormous slash without moving closer to the line, and managed an audible nick through to Sangakkara to put the chase on the skids. Watson and the batsman formerly known as Mr Cricket were left to pick through the ruins and see if there was sufficient brick and mortar left to begin the rebuilding process.
