Christian's hat-trick
We are not looking to anyone to do us any favors, Mahela Jayawardene said on the eve of the final game in the league phase of the CB Series. Fighting words; double-edged ones as it served as a taunt to the Indians waiting for Lanka to stumble, and also as a spur to his team to put all they had on the line.
Having upped the stakes, Mahela led superbly in the field, overcoming the twin handicaps of being short three bowlers (Dilshan carrying a thumb injury into the game, Mathews and Perera succumbing to injury during it) and having a below-par total to defend thanks to a late batting collapse by his side.
Australia, having done well to restrict the Lankans to 238, appeared to have an easy job on a wicket that was good for batting – but Mahela’s captaincy, fiercely determined fielding and the striking power of Lasith Malinga combined to give the visitors a 10-run win in the final over. The Lankans will now take Australia on in a best of three finals where, based on their showing thus far, they must fancy their chances. And the Indians will pack their bags and head home, knowing they have only themselves to blame for being dumped from the tournament after leading in the early stages.
