New Delhi: Virender Sehwag, with 22 Test centuries to his credit, is awaiting a century of a different kind. Having played 98 Test matches, the opener is now keen to complete his century of Tests in the upcoming series against England.

Provided he plays the first two Tests of the four-match series, Sehwag will achieve the feat in Mumbai, the venue of the second Test. And he is excited with that prospect. “It is definitely going to be a dream come true for me…. My dream was to play cricket for India."

“When I played my first Test, I thought I should play 100 Tests... At that time, many people said that I was talented and that I should remain focussed and play 100 matches. So I am very excited and, hopefully, I will be able to deliver,” Sehwag said during a promotional in the capital on Tuesday.

His approach to batting might appear to be that of a run-hungry batsman, but Sehwag said that his only prayer to God when he goes out to bat is to give him at least one run.

“When I go out, there is always a zero against my name... I always tell God to give me at least one run…I always do my best and remain happy with whatever runs I get,” he said.

Sehwag had hurt his finger during Delhi’s just-concluded Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh. Asked about the status of the injury, he said: “The condition of my finger is much better… It’s fine at the moment… There is no problem,” he said.

Despite the injury, Sehwag came out to bat (though at No. 6) in Delhi’s second innings and struck a scintillating century. “I am happy to have scored the century, but at the same time, I was sad because we could not save the match,” he said.

However, when asked if he would like to bat in the middle-order while turning out for Team India, Sehwag said: “I am not going to say anything on it... There will be a camp from Friday… And I won’t tell the management about it… I can’t ask them to tinker with the batting order.”

“Against UP, I batted in the middle-order because of the injury… In any case, it is the team management that decides the batting order,” he added.

Speaking about the Test series against England, Sehwag ruled out that there’s any feeling revenge among the Indians.

“That’s a media hype… We have no such thing in our minds. Our aim is to play well and win the series... England are a good side, but so are we… It is going to be a tough series. Most of our players are playing first-class cricket to prepare for the series and, hopefully, we will do well.”

When asked which one of his two triple centuries in Tests had brought him more satisfaction, Sehwag said that the first one, which was against Pakistan, remains special to him.

“The first one was like a comeback in Tests... And the second one was a message that Virender Sehwag was not finished yet… But the first one had come against a better bowling attack.”
