Viru-Gauti surpass Sunny-Chauhan

India won the toss for the 6th consecutive time in Tests in Ahmedabad. The last time India lost a toss at this venue was against England in December 2001. India have now won the toss 9 times in the 12 Tests played at this venue.

Nick Compton became the 654th Test player for England. Incidentally, England had no Test debutant from July 2010 to Feb 2012. However, since March 2012 they have had 4 Test debutants.

With Nick Compton making his Test debut he became the third grandfather-grandson pair to play Tests for England. The full list of such pairs is as follows:

m Vic Richardson (Aus, 19 Tests, 1924-1936)/Chappell brothers ' Ian (75 Tests, 1964-1980), Greg (87 Tests, 1970-1984) and Trevor (3 Tests, 1981)

m George Headley (WI, 22 Tests, 1930-1954)/Dean Headley (Eng, 15 Tests, 1997-1999)

m Jahangir Khan (Ind, 4 Tests, 1932-1936)/Bazid Khan (Pak, 5 Tests, 2004-2008)

m Maurice Tremlett (Eng, 3 Tests, 1948)/Chris Tremlett (Eng, 15 Tests, 2005-2011)

m Denis Compton (Eng, 78 Tests, 1937-1955)/NickCompton (Eng, 1 Test, 2012)

Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag brought up their 11th century opening stand in Test cricket. They now have the most, surpassing the Sunil Gavaskar/Chetan Chauhan tally of 10 such stands. Interestingly India have lost only one Test when the Sehwag/Gambhir duo have put up a century stand for the opening wicket (137 vs SA at Centurion, 2010-11), which incidentally was the last time the pair put on a 100-plus stand in Tests.

When on 37, Gambhir became the 14th Indian batsman and only second left-hander after Sourav Ganguly to score 2,000 Test runs on home soil. Tendulkar, with 6,841, has the most runs at home.

Gambhir has been dismissed six times now by Graeme Swann, the maximum number of times the English offie has dismissed any batsman. Swann has also dismissed Shivnairne Chanderpaul, Marcus North, Devon Smith and Rangana Herath five times each, all the above being left-handers.

Sehwag brought up his 23rd Test century. Interestingly, 22 of them have come in the 1st innings of the Test match. With Sehwag's 100 coming in 90 balls, he just missed becoming the fastest Indian to score a hundred against England. Kapil Dev had scored 100 in 86 balls in Kanpur, 1981-82.

Sehwag also became the 10th batsman to score a century in his 99th Test. The highest score made by a player in his 99th Test, is 239 by Sourav Ganguly against Pakistan in Bangalore, 2007-08.

When he claimed the wicket of Sehwag, Graeme Swann (194 wkts) became the most successful off-spinner for England surpassing Jim Laker's tally of 193 wickets. For the record, the most successful off-spinners for England are Swann (196*), Jim Laker (193), Fred Titmus (153) and John Emburey (147).
